HOWDY Hermanas,

I would like to take the time and thank all of you that were in Aggieland this weekend. Conference was a great success and so were our Alumnae Outreach, fundraisers, and Open House. It makes me so happy that there were so many alumnae present. It was a beautiful reminder of the sisterhood and bonding that CUS eXemplifies, my very reasons as to why I joined. Special thanks to Sandy & Emely for helping us Sunday at Open House!

BeCUS Academic eXcellence is Priority

The GreatPlains Sisterhood Conference, which included a regional awards ceremony, was held over the weekend at Texas A&M University. Alpha Zeta Chapter and Felisha Treviño (AZ/K) received an award for having the highest individual and chapter grade-point-average out of all the CUS chapters and undergraduate sisters in Great Plains. Representing Great Plains, the chapter and Felisha will be competing with other chapters and sisters at the national level at our 32^nd Convention & Leadership Conference, June 14-17, 2012.

We are eXtremely proud of the women we have recruited into our chapter, women who understand the importance of academic eXcellence and make it a priority as individuals and as a chapter. On behalf our Alpha Zeta Chapter alumnae, congratulations undergrads on this Amazingly Zealous accomplishment and for furthering our vision.

Congratulations to Cynthia “Ardesthe” Sorto & Narcely “In’acious” Ruiz on passing their state exam for social work licensure.

The mission of the social work profession is “to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressing and living in poverty.” We hope that this accomplishment will open many doors of opportunity to do what you love most. In honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

“I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” – Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

As everyone soon lies down to rest, let us keep in our memory Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., both an inspirational, and pivotal figure in both the Civil Rights Movement and the economic justice movement in the 1960′s. It is four days short of 26 years since President Reagan had signed into legislation that Martin Luther King Jr. Day officially becomes a federal holiday. In 1963, Dr. King had given his memorable “I Have a Dream” speech at the March on Washington, which had later served as a template for other civil rights advocacy groups to base their ideals.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” – Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

“Law and order exist for the purpose of establishing justice and when they fail in this purpose they become the dangerously structured dams that block the flow of social progress….One who breaks an unjust law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for law.” – Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

It was by using the methods and teachings of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi that MLK Jr. had developed his well-known non-violent and sometimes silent form of protest, as seen in the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Albany Movement, Alabama Movement, and later the famous March on Washington.

In the 13 grueling years that he had dedicated wholeheartedly to the Civil Rights Movement, at the age of 39 he was assassinated. It is in his memory that this day, the third Monday of January each year, that all governmental buildings and institutes, as well as educational buildings, close in his honor so that we can recognize this day.

Considering what his overall message meant, including desegregation and breaking the chains of discrimination and hatred towards our fellow mankind, Chi Upsilon Sigma, National Latin Sorority, Inc., since its founding in 1980, has made the “I Have A Dream” Foundation its national philanthropy in hopes that all children will have the equal opportunity to attend, and achieve, a higher education.

Cherishing the lives we have, and celebrating the holiday in honor of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: reverend, political activist/advocate, opportunist, idealist, son, husband, father.

eXceptional Donation to IHAD!

Congratulations are in order to the sisters of Alpha Zeta Chapter, Corazones Unidos Siempre, Chi Upsilon Sigma, National Latin Sorority, INC! Last night at Texas Christian University’s Christmas Tree Lighting in the Frog Patio, the women of CUS, AZ chapter, were awarded $1,000 to donate to our national philanthropy, the “I Have a Dream Foundation” in honor of our chapter having the highest volunteer and participation rate in the Angel Card Gift Drive. The Angel Card Gift Drive was a collaborative event with Order of Omega Greek Honor Society (of which many of our chapter’s sisters are members of) and Child Protective Services where more than 350 children total were given a Christmas this year by being sponsored by TCU students and faculty/staff to provide gifts for these children in need. Not only did Alpha Zeta give several children hope and joy this Christmas, but also will give to IHAD. I’m very honored to be a part of this amazingly zealous chapter, and this true sisterhood. CHI-HOOT!

October is Domestic Abuse Awareness Month and the brothers of Lambda Theta Phi, Latin Fraternity, Inc., will be presenting “A Walk in Her Shoes,” co-hosted with the wise women of Chi Upsilon Sigma, National Latin Sorority, Inc. TONIGHT at 8PM in the BLUU Chambers! Please don’t overlook the value in this event – even if you just come for a little while, bring anybody you can so we all can raise awareness to this devastating trend. Chi Upsilon Sigma Sister

Creates an Outlet for Veterans in College

Arlington, TX (10/19/11) – In recent years at University of Texas – Arlington the number of veterans enrolling in college has increased dramatically since the spring of 2009. Currently there are over 1,100 veterans who are registered for courses for fall 2011 compared to the 525 who were enrolled just last year.

In order to aid the high volume of veterans a the University of Texas – Arlington, Chi Upsilon Sigma sister, Roxanna Latifi, Student Development Specialist, created a series of workshops that solely caters to the needs of Veterans. This sequence of programs covers a wide variety of topics to assist veterans as they make their transition from the battlefield to the classroom. These workshops include:

Time Management for Student Veterans
Understanding Your Learning Style
Improving Your Reading and Note (Oct. 19, 2011)
Managing Test Anxiety (Nov. 2, 2011)
Money Management (Nov. 16, 2011)
Building Healthy Lifestyles (Nov. 30, 2011)

Roxanna Latifi has been a sister of Chi Upsilon Sigma since spring 2004 and has been extremely active within the organization ever since. As an undergraduate she has held numerous positions at the Alpha Zeta Chapter of Chi Upsilon Sigma at Texas Christian University. Some of these positions include Alpha Zeta Chapter President, Secretary and Multicultural Greek Council Representative. After Roxana graduated she continued to be involved as a sister and held positions such as Alumna Advisor and Region 5 Expansion Officer.

Professionally Roxanna currently serves as the University of Texas Arlington’s Student Development Specialist. She specializes in facilitating and creating programming and marketing materials for student veterans, transfer students and first generation students. In addition she also creates and facilitates the Greek Academic Success Program.

Also, as a treat, we will be presenting Thursday’s Origins of Latin Music event with the Beta Pi chapter of Lambda Theta Phi, Latin Fraternity, Inc. !! If you think you can get down with two Latin Greek organizations, we’ll see you there!
